It’s official… the 2018/19 EFL season starts in Reading! We will be hosting the Sky Bet Championship curtain-raiser at home against Derby County… the first Friday-night game of the campaign.
Kicking off at 8pm on Friday 3rd August, all eyes will be on RG2 as the Rams come to town for the opening fixture, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
Without doubt much of the attention will be focused on our visitors; after missing out in the play-offs last season, they appointed former England international and Chelsea legend Frank Lampard to the helm.
And the sub-narratives continue… Lampard and Royals boss Paul Clement were fighting on the same side for a long time during their time together at Stamford Bridge, where as player and coach they lifted the FA Cup and Premier League in Chelsea’s double-winning campaign in 2009/10.
For Reading manager Clement, it will be the first opportunity to lead the Royals against his former side Derby, who he managed during the 2015/16 season.
