Fara stars as England take important point from Germany

Royals midfielder features in vital draw

6 March 2018

In the process of earning a record-extending 168th cap for England, Reading FC Women midfielder Fara Williams played an hour in an important 2-2 draw against Germany on Sunday – meaning that they only need to draw against hosts USA in the final game to win the SheBelieves Cup 2018!

The Lionesses twice came from behind to take a point – and after a 4-1 win in their opening fixture against France, they are level on points with the USWNT with a superior goal difference.

Just a minute after Hasret Kayikçi had converted from close range for Germany after a sustained spell of pressure, Ellen White struck a leveller for England – with Williams the provider.  A neat pass from the Royals midfielder allowed White to find space and fire from the edge of the area, with a deflection beating Almuth Schult in the Germany net.

Germany retook the lead soon after the half-time interval – Millie Bright was the unfortunate party for the Lionesses.  Siobhan Chamberlain had kept out Lina Magull’s initial effort, but the ball ricocheted off her teammate and back into the net.

But England were back on terms in the 73th minute when Demi Stokes’ long ball released White again – uncontested by the defence, she took her time to place past Schult for her second to earn her nation a point.

The Lionesses sit top of the group, ahead of the USA on goal-difference.  Tournament hosts USA face England in Orlando at 12am (GMT) in the small hours of Thursday morning – a draw will be enough to see England win their first ever instalment of the SheBelieves Cup!
