Reading FC Women were comprehensive winners against WSL1’s basement side Yeovil Town on Wednesday evening, defeating the Glovers 3-0 at Adams Park.
Yeovil, who had lost all ten of their previous games in the league season so far, put up some resistance but eventually goals by Remi Allen, Lauren Bruton and Kirsty Linnett made the difference.
The visitors almost took a shock lead, however, as Nicola Cousins’ shot from the best part of 35 yards needed touching onto the crossbar by Mary Earps.
Reading began to pile on the pressure as Bruton rounded the goalkeeper, only to see a last-ditch intervention from Bow Jackson turn off the line. And then Jo Potter was inches away from finding the top corner with an effort from distance.
It was threatening to look like a frustrating evening as Brooke Chaplen won a penalty for the Royals, only to see her spot-kick saved by Megan Walsh low to her left.
But the breakthrough eventually came three minutes from half-time – Allen saw an initial effort saved, but she bundled in the rebound to open an advantage.
Bruton doubled the lead within seven minutes of the restart – played through one-on-one, she outwitted Walsh by deftly clipping over the advancing goalkeeper.
And after Potter’s free-kick had brought another good save from Walsh, Linnett added a third to effectively kill the game off – heading in from inside the six-yard box with just over 10 minutes remaining.
Reflecting on the game, manager Kelly Chambers said: "It was really key for us to make sure we got three points on the board tonight. We had a fantastic footballing display against Chelsea, but we knew this was going to be a different type of game. We had to move the ball quickly to find those pockets.
“We knew Yeovil were going to come and try to frustrate us, but we just needed to make sure we put our game plan into practice. The girls have delivered tonight.”
