Reading Football Club are pleased to announce that Barnsley captain Andy Yiadom has agreed to join the Royals on a deal until the summer of 2022, which will make him our first signing of the upcoming transfer window.
The Ghana international right-back, 26, will officially become a member of the Royals’ squad at the expiration of his contract at Oakwell on July 1st. Less than a fortnight has passed since the end of last season, and everything is already in place to complete our first piece of business this summer!
Reading manager Paul Clement said: “I’m very happy that Andy is joining Reading as my first signing. He is someone that I’ve known for a while, and whose progress I was tracking when I was at Swansea.
“Andy comes here with valuable experience of the Championship – he’s a good age at 26, and he has the right desires and ambitions which will help us to move forward with this club.”
Yiadom has built his footballing CV with a climb through the divisions in his career so far. Having started through the youth system at Watford, he made his start in senior football at Hayes & Yeading United in the Conference Premier – with an impressive season seeing him snapped up by league rivals, Braintree Town, while still a teenager.
After scoring an impressive eight times from full-back in a standout season with Braintree, he got his first Football League move – with Barnet calling for his services.
He gradually forced his way into the first team picture at Underhill – initially in midfield and then in defence – and ultimately proved to be a key cog in the Barnet squad in his four seasons there, which included a move to their new stadium at The Hive.
Yiadom became a mainstay in the Bees’ defence that earned promotion back to League Two in 2014/15 – and in their first season back in the EFL, he would be promoted to the position of club captain.
Standout performances made the Londoner a sought-after player – so a move to Oakwell followed when Barnsley were recruiting for their return to the Championship in 2016. Yiadom settled straight into the Tykes’ side, with his form warranting a first senior call-up to the Ghana national team in 2017!
A second campaign with Barnsley followed with the full-back making more than 60 appearances across his two seasons in South Yorkshire – where again his leadership qualities would be rewarded with the captain’s armband.
And now, after fending off competition for his signature, we’re delighted to be able to welcome Andy to RG2.
Chief Executive Ron Gourlay said: “We are delighted to have everything in place to complete our first signing of the summer, as we begin to assemble our squad for the upcoming season. Andy is a player who has shown his quality in the Championship and will be a hugely welcome addition to Reading Football Club, and we are delighted that Andy sees Reading as the right fit for him too.”
Technical Director Brian Tevreden added: “Andy is a player that we have been tracking for a long time and have worked hard to sign, so it is really pleasing to finally be able to welcome him to Reading. Andy’s qualities stood out to us – his ability as an athletic and technical footballer, his potential to keep improving his game, as well his leadership abilities. These assets are very valuable to a football club and we look forward to welcoming him to Hogwood when pre-season preparations begin.”
