Vito Mannone says the Royals will hope to come back stronger next season, after a difficult term for the squad.
Reading earned survival in the Championship with a goalless draw at Cardiff City at the weekend, ending the season with a positive result away at a promoted team.
Now that the players have some time to recuperate and get themselves ready for another tilt at the Championship next time around, Mannone says the squad hope to use that time wisely.
"The objective to get safe has been achieved, that's one thing out of the way," he said following the match in Cardiff.
"We just need to learn from this season, learn from what happened - people at the club at the beginning of the season wanted to be like Cardiff on Sunday.
"It didn't happen for different reasons, it's been a tough season but, in the end, we've come out of it with the late objective we had, which was to get safe.
"We'll rest first this summer, try to run and try to train to come back in good physical shape to push on from next year.
"The whole team knows we want to be the best team on the other side, not be the team that's fighting a relegation battle. That's what the club wants and what every player wants in that dressing room.
"We need to have a great pre-season physically and mentally, stick together, some new players will come in but we need to keep the team together and try to push on for next year."
