Cambridge United’s 4-1 away win at Yeovil Town in the Second Round of the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday evening means that the Royals will have a trip to the Abbey Stadium in their first involvement this season.
As a Category 1 Academy, our boys enter at the Third Round stage – whereas Cambridge, a Category 3 Academy, entered in the First Round and defeated AFC Sudbury at home before their trip to Huish Park this week.
It was a comprehensive win in the end for the U’s – Ben Worman struck from inside the box and then Joe Neal stole a march on his marker to head in a corner, putting Cambridge two up in the opening eight minutes.
Sam Bennett struck his side’s third from outside the area, before Worman rounded off a quick counter with his second goal to see the visitors cruising at 4-0 when the referee signalled for half-time.
Gabriel Rogers’ sole goal for Yeovil in the latter stages of the match was merely academic as the U’s strode into the next stage.
It’ll be no walkover for our Under-18s at the Abbey Stadium – Cambridge have a track record in this competition. Two years ago they knocked out Millwall and Bournemouth en route to the Fourth Round… their best ever performance in the competition.
The precise date and kick-off times, as well as ticketing arrangement, will be announced in due course. According to FA rules the Third Round fixture must be played by Saturday 15th December.
