Once again, a game of fine margins in the Sky Bet Championship. And it was Birmingham City who came out on the right side of it at the Royals’ expense.
“We didn’t start great, and they put pressure on us from the start, but we got through that well,” Tyler Blackett reflected.
“But we should have got more from the game and took some of the chances that we made. It wasn’t to be in the end.
“It was fine margins. We created chances, we didn’t finish them. That’s what the game is about… we need to finish chances that we get. They finished their two.”
When the game was finely poised at 1-0, sub Sam Baldock’s low cross was nearly turned in for an own-goal by Maikel Kieftenbeld – only for Lee Camp to make a miraculous save. A minute later, Lukas Jutkiewicz put the ball in the net at the other end.
“It was a case of needing to be switched on after missing a chance,” Blackett continued.
“That’s a crucial moment and we need to be switched on and defend well… and we didn’t quite do that.
“They got the second goal, and that killed us off to an extent. We managed to get one back, but there wasn’t quite enough time in the end.
“We have a good squad, both in the players that are starting and those that are coming off the bench. We know that we have quality but we need to put it together day to day, and game to game.
“It’s about building. We have to focus on our jobs and we can’t think too much about what other teams are doing. We want to get on a little run of games and get a winning streak going.”
