Reading Football Club are pleased to announce that Gianluca Nani has been appointed as our new Sporting Director.
Nani, who has worked in the same role for both West Ham United and Watford previously, steps immediately into the role vacated by Brian Tevreden, who has taken a position as CEO with Belgian club KSV Roeselare.
CEO Ron Gourlay said, “We are delighted to welcome Gianluca to Reading Football Club. He is a Sporting Director who has experience of working at the very highest level and a proven pedigree in nurturing young footballing talent and creating recruitment and development structures which successfully work hand in hand. I am looking forward to Gianluca joining us here at Reading.”
Our new Sporting Director, Gianluca Nani, said: "I'm really proud to join and now be part of an historic club as glorious as Reading.
"I will put in all my effort and my knowledge to ensure that the club and its fans enjoy the success they deserve. With hard work, I am truly confident we will have a bright future together."
Born in Rome, Nani studied law and first began working as Sporting Director at Italian side Brescia.
He oversaw a successful period in Serie A and was credited with developing talents such as World Cup winners Andrea Pirlo and Luca Toni and recruiting former FIFA World Player of the Year Roberto Baggio and Pep Guardiola to the Stadio Mario Rigamonti.
In March 2008, he arrived in the Premier League, becoming the first Technical Director in West Ham's history to work alongside Alan Curbishley and then Gianfranco Zola at Upton Park.
In July 2012, Nani joined Watford as Technical Director at Vicarage Road and he helped to lay the foundations at a club which is currently unbeaten in third position in the Premier League table.
Most recently, Gianluca – who speaks English, Spanish and French in addition to his native Italian - adopted the position of Technical Director of Abu Dhabi-based Al Jazira in the Arabian Gulf League.
Now he returns to England to work at Reading alongside Royals boss Paul Clement, his coaching staff, the players and at the heart of our much-lauded Academy system.
