STAR host Paul Clement at engaging Fans Forum

Boss open and honest in answering all things Reading Football Club last night

7 September 2018

Approximately 150 STAR members made up the audience as Chairman Ian Maynard welcomed Royals boss Paul Clement to the Princess Suite on Thursday night for a Fans Forum Q&A session with supporters.

The Royals boss was open, honest and very happy to answer a host of questions, topics ranging from injuries, tactics and player confidence to the minutae of throw-ins, set pieces and transfers.

The evening is strictly kept exclusive for those STAR members in the room but here are a few bullet points which STAR have released from an entertaining and informative Q&A.

...on the international break.
"You do want to win the game just before the break, but it’s not all doom and gloom. There are only six players away on international duty so we had an 11-a-side match today and both McCleary and Harriott were involved. Obita away is in the USA working on his knee with a strengthening coach."

Clement calls for competition for places to raise our game

...on performances so far?
"The margins are fine, single goal defeats. Only Bolton and Sheffield Wednesday were disappointing. The first half against Derby County was probably the best we’ve played so far."

...on systems?
"We’re looking for consistency, clarity - not constantly changing tactics. 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 is the main route for me – in some games we might need the extra midfielder. Ideally we’d like to defend higher but in the Championship it goes from back to front so quickly sometimes and you have to defend long balls. There has been a lot of very direct play against us in the opponents we have faced this season. I don’t want to be a team that lumps it back to front. We’re trying to get a balance."

...on bringing some of the young players in?
"You need to be dominating games at Under-23 level first. But some are starting to do the things you need to in order to get in first team."

...on the transfers in?
"Saeid Ezatolahi is away with the Iran national team at the moment. He will be a big physical presence, 6ft 2ins, strong in the tackle, can head the ball. He'll certainly be a presence in the box too. I’ve signed eight players in this window and all the signings have come in with my blessing. Some I’ve pushed for very strongly."

...on the window rumours and transferring players out?
"Liam Moore is staying now as we know, he’s signed a five-year contract. The owner was determined not to sell him. So everyone is happy with how that sitatuon resolved itself. We brought in eight players but we will need the next two windows to get the right blend and to trim the squad. But it is better to have more than less!"

...on morale?
"We’ve got a good team spirit, a strong culture in the dressing room. The players are suffering like you’re suffering as fans right now. The group certainly has potential to improve. I think when we win a couple of games there will be a momentum shift."

...and the final word.
"Thanks for giving me inviting me tonight and giving me a relatively easy time! I understand your frustrations but you can be a big help when you get behind the players. Thank you for your support – we want to turn the corner and give you something to be proud of."
