"We gave all our energy and all our love and now we are working as a family"

Royals boss reflects on the power of love

30 April 2019

The Beatles famously suggested, "All you need is love, love is all you need." Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr's lyrics were echoed by Royals boss José Gomes after safety was mathematically secured on Teesside on Saturday.

"It maybe seems like a very simple thing to say, but I really believe that love is the strongest power in the world," he began. "And when you work with love, and give love to everybody - the players, the staff, the club - in the end, then you get something back.

"And that's what happened. We came here as a coaching team and gave all our energy, all our love, because we really love our profession, what we do for a living. And in the end we receive back what we gave.

"And this achievement, which is a club achievement - not just down to us or the players, but everyone that I have mentioned before - it is also a result of this love."

As Huey Lewis and the News also identified in their lyrics, 'The power of love is a curious thing' and the Royals manager is confident that teamwork and togetherness has played a big part in securing safety this season.

"In the beginning when I arrived, it wasn't the case - but now I feel we are working together like a family and everybody wants to work and help the first team, try to put the energy they have to bring better things to the club.

"This teamwork has resulted in this achievement. The players score the goals and win the games, the techincal staff deserve credit because I am not working alone, but also a very special word to our fans - they have suffered bad results but never gave up on supporting the players.

"I told you in the beginning that we would achieve our target. I didn't know exactly when, but the way the players worked and accepted my ideas, I knew it was only a question of time.

"Now we have achieved what we wanted to achieve and we deserve it. And we have the last game on Sunday which hopefully can be a beautiful party ending with a good result for us."
