Women register big victory at Yeovil

Royals dish out 5-0 triumph on the road

18 April 2019

Reading FC Women did a demolition job on the Women’s Super League’s bottom side Yeovil Town, running out 5-0 winners in Dorchester.

It was a different-look side to the one which came oh-so-close to earning a place in the SSE Women’s FA Cup final; manager Kelly Chambers made seven changes to the starting line-up, including a first league start for Lily Woodham.

After a frantic start in which both sides wasted chances, the game settled into at attack versus defence as Yeovil repelled the Royals onslaught – stubborn rear-guard action meant clear-cut chances were at a premium.

But Fara Williams didn’t need a clear-cut chance to open the scoring; she relied on a bit of individual brilliance. Receiving on the left, she struck a curling shot across goal and into the top corner from outside the area; the goalkeeper stranded, and the deadlock broken.

The second came after the interval, as half-time sub Lauren Bruton finished well. Rakel Hönnudóttir supplied the assist with a smart back-heel, following a well-weighted through ball from Charlie Estcourt.

The cushion remained at two until the final ten minutes; the Royals blitzed three quick goals to add some deserved gloss to the scoreline.

Millie Farrow came off the bench in the 78th minute and added to the Glovers’ woes; she grabbed a goal just three minutes after coming on as Gemma Davison drove into the area and squared unselfishly.

Bruton added her second in fortunate circumstances – a defensive challenge cannoning off the Royals attacker and in – and Farrow completed the rout in the final minute of the 90, denied once by Megan Walsh but reacting quickly to convert the rebound.
