Reading FC Women midfielder Fara Williams was a guest of HRH The Duke of Cambridge at the King’s Cup Regatta last week.
The Cup was first presented by King George V in 1920 and this year’s prestigious event took place in Cowes, on the Isle of Wight and was attended by both The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as well as their chosen patronages.
Eight yachts representing causes supported by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took to the water, with both the Duke and Duchess each skippering their own yachts to raise money and awareness for the chosen charities. Williams was in a yacht representing CentrePoint, the UKs leading youth homelessness charity, for which she is an ambassador.
Other representatives included survival expert Bear Grylls, comedian John Bishop and television presenter Dan Snow.
Fara Williams said: “It was both an honour and a privilege to be asked to partake in the King’s Cup regatta, hosted by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. As a proud and passionate ambassador of the charity Centrepoint, I was excited to be able to show my continued support for the fantastic work they do in supporting homeless people, and to raise awareness and much-needed funds for them”.
Williams skippered her CentrePoint crew to a credible third place and was presented with a prize by the Duke and Duchess themselves.
Talking about the experience of sailing for the first time, and at such a prestigious event, Williams said: “The experience itself was both surreal and awe-inspiring. As a keen sportswoman, I relished the opportunity to try my hand at sailing, and have nothing but praise for those who helped with the training beforehand. The crew’s enthusiasm was infectious and helped to spur on my competitive spirit; I was keen to secure a win for my charity! It was soon a case of ‘every boat for themselves’ and I almost forgot we were competing against royalty. I wish the regatta all the success in the future.”
Williams is currently with the rest of the Reading FC Women’s squad in Spain, as they continue their pre-season tour which culminates in a match against Valencia on Wednesday, 14th August.
