After a raucous travelling support cheered Reading to victory in midweek at Adams Park, manager José Gomes is hopeful that the same kind of atmosphere will fall upon Madejski Stadium when we host Cardiff City on Sunday.
The Reading faithful have been in fine voice since the season kicked off, through thick and thin. And with the same kind of backing the Royals boss believes the league campaign can begin in earnest against Neil Warnock’s Bluebirds.
“As soon as the Wycombe match ended, we began preparing for the Cardiff game,” said the Royals boss. “It’s interesting because they have a similar kind of style so that game was a test.
“I hope that we can feel the same kind of energy in our stadium that we felt when we were at Wycombe.
“Those fans were amazing and it is very important that they support our players, if we are going to achieve the targets we want.”
Tuesday’s cup game offered more players a chance to stake a claim for a place – José is happy to have the right kinds of selection headaches when we return to league action.
“All of my players want to play,” he continued. “That’s a good sign. I have very good problems. After I choose my line-up, some will feel bad inside because all of them want to play.
“But this is a good sign – a sign that I have options. We have a long season in front of us and all of the players will have chances to play. I have to take decisions, and that is not a problem. It’s a good thing.”
