Free travel comes at a cost. Not to supporters of course and we are not talking about the investment our owner Mr Dai has made in offering up complimentary coach seats to fifteen of our most distant away fixtures this season!
But the cost comes in terms of the time and effort of a number of individuals who organise away day travel operations and have handled the recent membership surge sparked by our owner’s generous offer.
And Reading Football Club would like to place on record its heartfelt appreciation to STAR for their incredible hard work that annually goes into arranging travel up and down the country.
Colin Bishop, Melanie Bishop, Steve Benton, Jon Hall, Sacha Liddiard and Paula Martin are fans. Loyal supporters. They are not paid or rewarded for the hours they put into arranging away travel - nor are any of the STAR board members who get involved to selflessly represent our fanbase at a wide range of senior club meetings or the volunteers who assist with administration or organising a range of events throughout the season.
“Too often, the work of these individuals is taken for granted. So we would like to personally say thank you,” Chief Executive Nigel Howe said. “I am delighted that we have been able to offer free away travel to supporters for fifteen of our games this season and, although the offer has been financed by Mr Dai, operationally this is only made possible with STAR’s support, unwavering commitment and tireless hard work.”
Five full coaches boarded at Madejski Stadium at 7am this morning and began a 457-mile round trip to the KCOM Stadium in support of José Gomes’ side on their first away trip of the season. And STAR were on hand at the crack of dawn to ensure the operation went smoothly for all supporters who had signed up to cheer us on against the Tigers today.
