Over the course of the past week, several new names have been added to the Royals’ roster.
Lucas Boyé joined the club late last week, before an exciting Tuesday evening saw the triple-arrival of goalkeeper Rafael, midfielder Pelé and Lucas João. And then George Pușcaș linked up with the squad late on Wednesday night to add an extra option to attack.
Reading boss José Gomes is pleased with the additional quality that the squad will benefit from, and allow players to push each other hard for those coveted starting positions.
“I am very happy, because we cannot hide that these players really increase the level of our squad,” Gomes explained. “It means that we are ready and we can assume that we can fight for a different challenge.
“We need to give time for these players to adapt – in a normal situation we would now start the pre-season with a complete squad, to share our ideas. So we need time and to be patient with them. But definitely we will be ready to fight.
“We talk about ‘good headaches’. A bad headache is one where you don’t have any solutions, and you need to create magic. Now, we have more than one option per position.
“I will try to be clear in the way that I share my ideas with them and the player who can do better at the things I am asking will play. It doesn’t matter about the colour of their skin, their passport, their age or experience. The player who can do better the things that I am asking will play.
“They are doing well – we will have to see about their physicality when they train, and see whether they are ready to play. But one thing is true – we have more options for the next game, and this is fantastic.”
