Lucas João seals permanent move to Reading

Striker signs deal which keeps him at the Madejski until 2023

6 August 2019

Reading Football Club are thrilled to announce that striker Lucas João has completed the paperwork on a four-year deal with the Royals, joining us from Sheffield Wednesday for an undisclosed fee.

The towering 25-year-old frontman completed his medical this afternoon and signed on the dotted line this evening to commit the next four years of his career to Reading.

Royals boss José Gomes said, “I am delighted Lucas has agreed to be part of what we’re trying to build here at Reading. A striker I have admired for some time, he has a commanding presence up front and, with a natural eye for goal, he is a player who is very difficult to defend against. So I’m looking forward to working with Lucas in training for the first time tomorrow.”

Born in Lisbon, João joined Nacional’s youth system, but made his professional debut whilst on loan with SC Mirandela in September 2012 - scoring four goals in his first six senior games.

He returned to the island of Madeira to break into the first team at Nacional in 2013–14, making his Primeira Liga bow as a second-half substitute against FC Arouca. His first top flight goals came in the form of a brace against Boavista and his performances soon caught the attention of other clubs; Sheffield Wednesday flew the forward to the UK to tie him to a four-year contract at Hillsborough.

He first taste of English football came in a 2-0 home win over Bristol City on the opening day of the 2015-16 season and three days later he registered his first goal for the Owls in a 4–1 victory over Mansfield Town in the League Cup.

Besides a short loan spell at Blackburn Rovers which yielded three league goals in three league starts, Lucas has spent the last four seasons in Sheffield - his record reads 29 goals scored in 66(+62) appearances at Wednesday.

João now links up with José Gomes’ squad just three days after coming off the bench to score in an opening day win against the Royals.

In three of his four seasons with Wednesday, Lucas scored in his first start of the season so Reading fans will be hoping our new striker can continue that record and also hit the ground running as a Royal.

Chief Executive Nigel Howe said, “In the final 15 minutes of Saturday’s game, Royals fans saw everything they needed to understand what Lucas João will add to our squad this season; he is incredibly strong on the ball, a threat in the air, has pace and power in abundance…and he’s an instinctive finisher. I am confident he will deliver a new dimension to our attack and I’m delighted that the next time I see him play he will be wearing the Reading crest.”

Welcome to Reading, Lucas.
