Reading Football Club can announce that 21-year old striker Sam Smith has completed a season-long loan move to Cambridge United.
The former Manchester United youngster arrived in our Academy back in 2014 and signed his first professional contract with the Royals two years later.
He spent a successful spell on loan with Bishop’s Stortford before breaking into the first team at Madejski Stadium to make 6(+5) appearances in blue and white hoops, scoring his first league goal in a 3-2 defeat at Carrow Road in March 2018.
Last season, Smith embarked on loan spells at Oxford United and then Shrewsbury Town - making a total of 26 appearances at both the Kassam Stadium and New Meadow during a season split between two League One clubs.
Now, he begins a new challenge at the Abbey Stadium. United finished in 21st place in League Two last season - avoiding relegation by six points.
Subject to the completion of the normal player registration procedures, Smith could be eligible to feature when Colin Calderwood’s side open their campaign at Bradford City this Saturday afternoon.
Everyone at Reading Football Club would like to wish Sam the very best of luck during his time with Cambridge United.
