Reading’s Under-23 side were on the wrong end of a 3-0 defeat away at West Ham United on Friday evening.
The hosts took a two-goal lead into the break, and despite the Royals’ best efforts, the Hammers extended their margin to three after the interval in Dagenham.
Adam Liddle had a chance to put Reading ahead early on, but mistimed the contact on his header and allowed the hosts off the hook.
Instead, the Hammers’ high press allowed Daniel Kemp to receive upfield and square for Alfie Lewis to slot in past Jokull Andresson.
A dangerous delivery by Teddy Howe meant that West Ham goalie Joseph Anang was called on for a reaction save, before Dejan Tetek had a shot blocked.
And so the hosts doubled their advantage instead. Oladapo Afolayan, through on goal, was felled in the area by Andresson – allowing Joe Powell to tuck in from the penalty spot.
The Royals couldn’t quite take advantage of a bright start to the second period, and were sucker-punched when Kemp grabbed the game’s third, as he received from Afolayan and rounded the goalkeeper.
The hosts held on to keep their perfect start to the Premier League 2 Division 2 season intact.
