The Royals travelled to Oakwell in search of three points, but returned with one more on the board after a second-half equaliser from Lucas João against Barnsley on Wednesday night.
"We have to start winning games to give our amazing fans something to cheer about"12 December 2019
But Charlie Adam spoke of the character shown by the Royals to fight back from a goal behind to earn a point on the night against a resolute Barnsley side.
Featuring from the start for the first time in the league for the Royals, Adam reflected on the result after the final whistle at Oakwell.
“In the end, you probably will take it after going behind,” Adam said. “As a group of players, we have got to do better. We come to a team at the bottom of the league, with some of the ways they play not deserving to be bottom of the league.
“It’s always disappointing to draw these types of games, especially when you’re expected to win.
“We started sluggish and we never got to grips with them in the first 25 minutes. We’re away from home so we expected that, we expected them to come at us. We need to improve, and as always we will sit down, watch and learn and go again with another tough game on Saturday.
“We have that character and that fight, we’ve shown that. We are not going to play well every week. But it is important that when we don’t play well, we still come away with points rather than nothing. It’s another point, and another step further in the league.
“The travel is difficult, it would be a four or five-hour bus journey back then back up here again on Friday, so the club have decided to base ourselves in the Midlands for this time and we get ourselves ready for Saturday.”
