Reading Football Club can announce that former Royals winger and first team coach Michael Gilkes has accepted an opportunity to take the reins as Academy Manager.
A player and a coach with the club, Gilkes has been an exemplary ambassador for Reading Football Club for many years and, having begun his coaching career within the younger age groups of this club’s Academy, he is perfectly placed to now step up from his position as Football Operations Manager and head up our Academy programme.
As a player, Gilkesy was a true fans’ favourite who joined the club as an 18-year-old in July 1984 and went on to feature more than 450 times for the Royals in all competitions, scoring 52 goals in 13 years at Reading.
Following the end of his playing career, he rejoined the club as an Academy coach in 2013 and helped a fresh crop of young players - across all age groups - make the grade in the game and realise their ambition of turning professional with Reading.
Now he takes charge of our Academy. Everyone at Reading Football Club would like to wish Michael the very best of luck in his new role with the Royals!
