Reading edged by in-form Arsenal in competitive encounter

Royals refuse to make it easy for top of the league Arsenal in 0-3 defeat

8 December 2019

The Royals fell to defeat at home to an in-form Arsenal side at Adams Park in a game that saw Kelly Chambers’ side miss numerous opportunities to change the course of the match, including a dominant second-half performance that saw Arsenal barely get out of their half.

Top of the league Arsenal were coming off a colossal 11-1 victory over Bristol City last weekend, but they werent to have such an easy time against Kelly Chambers' Royals. The hosts made their intentions known with a positive start as Fara Williams did well to intercept a loose pass but wasn’t able to beat Manuela Zinsberger in the Arsenal goal.

Moments later, Brooke Chaplen saw her shot fly across the face of goalmouth agonisingly wide of the far post, as Reading dominated the opening stages and continued towards the half-hour mark.

Arsenal grew into the contest as the half developed and Sophie Howard did well to vitally intercept a dangerous Beth Mead cross.

Vivianne Miedema fired over from outside the area but that came just before she broke the deadlock for the visitors, coolly chipping Grace Moloney on 28 minutes.

A wonderful move led to Arsenal’s second as Kim Little lofted the ball over Moloney having linked well with both Leah Williamson and Jordan Nobbs.

The Royals started the second half as they did the first, as Lisa-Marie Utland met a Williams cross but couldn’t keep her header down.

Arsenal were putting bodies on the line to block shots from Williams and Utland as Reading continued to try and force a way back into the game.

Williams had a free-kick go agonisingly close in shades of Reading's last match against Brighton & Hove Albion.

With 15 minutes to go, Jade Moore’s sumptuous pass found Williams in-behind, but the latter’s audacious volley dropped just wide of the post.

Moloney was called into action twice late on to deny Arsenal bagging a third goal as Lisa Evans also drove wide.

Arsenal did seal the points with a third goal in second half stoppage time as Miedema managed to lob Moloney.
