Gomes | “We must transfer good training sessions into the game”

Manager previews Forest fixture

11 January 2019

“It was important to have a full week with the players and to get to know each other better. They are really working very well.” That was José Gomes’ verdict as his first full, clear week of training comes towards a conclusion as we face Nottingham Forest this weekend.

“We have all of the training sessions on video and the work that they did is amazing.  So we are happy for that, but they must transfer that to the game.  This is the important thing.  I am sure that they will do it.

“We need a good result.  I think we showed a very good performance against Manchester United, but we didn’t win.

“What we need is to win.  These players need – and deserve – to win.  It’s transferring the work that we do daily on the training pitch, and doing it in the game.  It is not only a question of performing well; we must win the game.”

Forest lie just outside the play-off places at present; a good start to the season has made way for a rather rough run recently, and on Friday morning Aitor Karanka’s uncertain future as the club’s boss came to an end.

The issues that the visitors face is of little consequence though, as far as Gomes is concerned when he was interviewed at lunchtime on Thursday.

“This is their problem – not ours,” he continued.  “They have talented players and during this season they have played very well.  Their coach has shown good things and he has great experience.

“But we are looking at the way that they play – their strongest points and their weakest points.  That is what is important for us.”
