Adam | "I want to score goals, I want to create"

Charlie Adam on his Reading ambition

26 July 2019

A new presence in the Reading midfield, Charlie Adam is no stranger to playing the underdog, and believes that the Royals have the right tools and what it takes to challenge with the best.

"I want to win games, I want to score goals, I want to create, I want to pass it well and hopefully the fans come to support this team," Adam began.

"Since January onwards, Reading got themselves out of the relegation battle and stayed up. It’s a new season and the mindset has to be to aim as high as we can."

Adam spent thee seasons at Bloomfield Road early in his career, captaining a Blackpool side favourites for relegation, and instead guiding them through the play-offs and to Premier League promotion.

With the right momentum, he believes that any team can cause an upset.

"You want to get up that league and challenge the big boys – Stoke, West Brom, Leeds… those are the teams that people think will be up the top of the league, but why can’t Reading surprise somebody? I was at Blackpool when we were favourites to get relegated, and we got promoted to the Premier League.

"Momentum is key. You won’t play well every game, but if you don’t play well in the Championship you have to make sure that the blip is not too long.

"There are good teams in the Championship, but on their day anybody can beat anybody and we have to be at the mettle every day in training and on a Saturday.

"If we can get the young players tuned in and ready to go, they can go and play with the freedom, enjoyment and excitement that they need.

"The biggest thing is playing with a smile on your face. Work hard for the team, and the supporters will appreciate that."
