Morrison on the Royals project, leadership qualities and broken noses

New recruit on joining Reading

20 July 2019

“After speaking to people behind the scenes, you can see how ambitious the football club is and what they want to achieve,” said Michael Morrison after penning a two-year deal with Reading.

“There’s a new training ground coming and the infrastructure is here already. It’s a good opportunity for the club to push forward.

“I’m really excited to join the project. It started at the beginning of the year, so hopefully this season the club can push on and move forward.

“There were a few rumblings over the summer with the club’s position, but over the last 48 hours it has moved quickly. I came down to London yesterday and haven’t been home since – and now it’s all signed and done.

“It’s been a bit of a weird summer because for the last three weeks I’ve been training on my own and doing bits to keep fit, and waiting to join a team. So I’m excited to get in with a group, start working hard and getting ready for the beginning of the season.”

His presence on and off the pitch will be an important asset. The centre-half contributed an impressive seven goals for Birmingham City last season, as well as helping his side keep several shut-outs, and he is relishing the opportunity to give some guidance to some of our younger pros.

He continued: “Leadership is something that I want to bring; I hope that that will help some of the young players here, because it’s a hugely talented squad. I want to help everybody here.

“I want to be defensive, make sure that we don’t concede goals and that we win game. I hate conceding – I want to keep clean sheets and I’ll put my body on the line. I broke my nose the last two years – I’m ready to do that for Reading!

“I just want to get going. I’m excited for the new challenge ahead; it’s good motivation for me. I’m hungry to do well here and hopefully achieve some big things.”
