Reading got valuable match minutes in the bank on Wednesday night, and seemed to capitalise in front of goal by beating Gibraltar United 10-0 near their Spanish training camp.
As with the weekend’s game against Southend United, the Royals lined up in two separate sides to take 45 minutes each in this early friendly.
The teams were unchanged, too, barring Akin Odimayo replacing the injured Tom Holmes on tour and starting the first half in La Quinta.
A young side took to the turf in the first half, and dominated from the off. It didn’t take long for a youthful Reading XI to take the lead, either.
Reading broke on the right-hand side through Sam Baldock, with the striker lobbing into the box for Jordan Holsgrove to slot in from the middle of the box.
The Royals didn’t offer their opponents much of an opportunity to progress throughout the half, with Andrija Novakovich getting himself into space in the box, directing a shot over the bar.
He would be the beneficiary of a sloppy backpass after the half-hour mark that would double Reading’s advantage. A loose ball from the back was capitalised upon by Novakovich, taking a touch and slotting in from close range in a poacher’s finish.
Moments later, a third goal put Reading out of sight heading into the interval. A nicely-worked move across the Gibraltar United box found its way to Holsgrove once again, who picked it up and spotted the open side of goal, driving a low effort into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.
The young Royals were in full control of proceedings in La Quinta, before a more experienced side took to the turf in scenic mountainous surroundings for the second half.

With the gulf in class starting to show on the pitch, Reading had a fourth when Danny Loader was fouled in the box. Yakou Méïté stood over the penalty, and powered into the bottom corner.
Loader then added his first of the night moments later, before doubling his tally midway through the second half.
Young centre-back, Tom McIntyre got in on the act with 15 minutes remaining, capitalising on a loose ball in the area from a corner to prod home.
Loader struck again three minutes from time to complete a well-deserved hat-trick on the night, before Josh Barrett neatly tucked in past the goalkeeper to complete the rout and hit double figures on the night.
More valuable minutes in the bank for the Royals out in Spain, before a much sterner test against Spanish giants, Sevilla on Saturday evening.
