It’s been a season of celebrations for Reading FC Deaf as they find themselves in the running for a fifth trophy come the end of the month.
The Deaf Team, which is run through Reading FC Community Trust, have gone from strength to strength and continue to provide fantastic opportunities to get involved in sport for local people with hearing impairments – and the players are improving all the time, which has led to excellent progress on the field too.
The England Deaf South League came to its conclusion in April with our Reading team coming out on top, achieving 27 points from a possible 30 available.
The defining moment came against Peterborough United in March when after trailing 1-0 in the first half, a late brace that included a 90th minute winner secured all three points and what was to be the team’s third Championship title, finishing the three points above 2nd place Peterborough.
Attentions then fell to the FA People’s Cup that took place across the weekend of the 27th and 28th of April.
Adult Male Premiership finalists, the Deaf Team faced Sutton United at St. Georges Park and a dominant display was evident when we went ahead early on with a low driven finish from outside the box.
After hitting the woodwork twice, a well-worked second goal put the result beyond doubt, confirming a first national title for our Deaf side.
In May, it was North vs South in the EDF League Championship final, with Farsley Celtic the opponents on the day.
Having finished an impressive 13 points clear at the summit of their North League, Farsley found themselves ahead inside 15 seconds in Calverton.
However, with late comebacks the theme as of late, two goals in the final five minutes completed the turnaround for the Royals and secured yet another victory in a final for the Deaf team.
England Deaf South League Cup winners too, but the list of achievements doesn’t stop there, as there is one more final to take place before the end of the season.
Reading Deaf FC will battle it out in the South East FA Disability Cup Finals, which will take place on Saturday 22nd June. Venue and kick-off time are as follows:
Rectory Park, Ruislip Road, Northolt, Middlesex UB5 6AU
11am – 2pm
Congratulations to our Reading Deaf Team on a fantastic season and good luck in yet another final!
