Reading Football Club are delighted to announce that 20-year-old midfield maestro Ryan East has put pen to paper on a new contract which will keep him at Madejski Stadium until the summer of 2021.
The talented playmaker, who has become a vital cog in the success of our Under-23s since graduating from his Academy scholarship, completed the paperwork earlier today ahead of earning his first team debut against Leeds United this evening.
A cultured midfielder, East came through our much-lauded Category One Academy ranks and has impressed at Under-23 level since - scoring his first goal shortly after turning 18 in a win over Leicester City back in October 2016.
Ryan was the only ever-present player for our Under-23s in last season’s Premier League 2 campaign and also earned appearances in the Premier League International Cup and against senior teams in Checkatrade Trophy competition. He has carried his impressive run into this term - currently he is our Academy’s most-capped player with another 25(+1) appearances for our Under-23s in 2018-19.
Twice in 2018, East was named as a nominee for a PL2 Player of the Month accolade, and he was first named in our first team squad at the start of 2019; José Gomes included him amongst his substitutes for an FA Cup clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford in January.
Tonight, the manager has placed his faith in our Academy once more by handing the young midfielder his debut in an important clash against high-flying Leeds United at Madejski Stadium.
And East is a milestone marker - by featuring in tonight’s game he becomes the 50th player to have graduated from our esteemed Academy since its inception in the summer of 1999.
Following in the footsteps of Henderson, Tyson, Karacan, Church, Sigurdsson, McCarthy, Pearce, Hector, Obita, Loader, Rinomhota and so many more…East’s debut means the half century has been achieved in less than 20 years of the club growing its own.
Everyone at Reading Football Club would like to congratulate Ryan on his new contract and wish him the very best of luck for a future which will play out in blue and white hoops.
