“It was difficult, especially because of the weather,” began José Gomes after a fixture in Stoke that had lived up to its stereotype – blustery, rainy and a real slog.
“There was a strong wind and the ball was moving without anyone even touching it – these are tough conditions to play in.
“We didn’t perform well, and Stoke didn’t perform well. It was not a beautiful game. But it was the type of game that you can expect in these kind of conditions.
“At the beginning they could have scored; at the end we could have scored. It is a fair result. For sure this point will be important for our position in the table at the end of the season.
“In the position that we’re in, every point is good. We need a lot of points before we will feel really safe in the table, so the fight will go on.
“From our side, it was a game that we could not afford to lose. Sometimes that spirit damaged the quality of our offensive movements. But we tried to win the challenges and we won most of them.
“It was very important to get through those early stages – if we had conceded it would have been difficult to turn the result around.
“It was important to get a clean sheet again. We tried to achieve the three points to win the game but it was a difficult fixture. It was important that we achieved at least a point today.
“We are more disappointed than happy, because we want to get away from danger as quickly as possible. We know that if we draw all the games we have left, that might not be enough – so we need to win.”
