Yakou Méïté stole the show with his 97th-minute winner against Wigan Athletic – his stooping head, deep into added time, sparked jubilant scenes around Madejski Stadium.
“I said recently that the most important thing for us is fighting to the end,” Yakou said. “These types of teams can be very, very tough. We did it – so we are very happy.
“When they went 2-1 ahead, for the next few minutes our heads were gone. But everyone tried to mobilise and Mo scored a great strike for the leveller. And then to get the winner… everyone was happy for me and the team.
“It’s only good to score if it helps the team to win, and that’s why I’m happy and proud today.
“I like these types of games – where you fight, you give everything. I think everyone did it – we gave 100%, and at the end we won. Even when they were winning, we were fighting. We were tough.
“It wasn’t the best game; we have played better football this season. But when you play against teams in a similar position, you have to be mentally prepared for the battle, to go more direct, to fight for our family. This is why we won the game.”
The celebrations were a sight to behold – the Ivorian was grateful for the support.
“The fans today were incredible,” he continued. “I want to say ‘thank you’ to them. It isn’t finished – come to support us away and at home – that’s important for us.
“We’re going to do it, but we need to do it together. Not just the team, but the fans as well. Everyone together.”
