Report | U23s level late against Boro

Stoppage time penalty earns point for young Royals

12 March 2019

As the first team were gearing up to take on Wigan Athletic on Saturday afternoon, our Under-23s were busy staging a late comeback of their own at Hogwood.

Scott Marshall's side twice came from behind to salvage a 2-2 draw against Middlesbrough at Hogwood on Saturday lunchtime.

The Royals dominated from the outset, but struggled to break Boro down initially, and the visitors Tyrone O’Neill put the visitors ahead on the half-hour mark, despite rarely threatening in the first half.

Ade Shokunbi equalised for the Royals just after half time with a neat half-volley, before Mitchell Curry gave Boro the lead once more with half an hour to go.

Boro rarely forayed forward against the young Royals, but showed a clinical streak in front of goal to lead heading into the closing stages, keeping their shape well defensively to try and restrict Reading's opportunities as they came around.

But the young Royals weren't to be denied as the game wore on, fighting all the way and eventually earning themselves a penalty in second half added time.

Tyler Frost, who scored from the spot to win the U23s’ recent clash against Southampton, was on hand to convert comfortably in the last minute of added time to give the youngsters another league point.

It was another test of strength of character for our young side, who are back in action on Friday afternoon - taking on Newcastle United at 1pm in the Premier League Cup at Kingfield Stadium, Woking.
