Josh Barrett has joined the Republic of Ireland Under-21 squad ahead of a Toulon Tournament which will now see three Royals represented.
Following Danny Loader's call up to the England Under-20 squad and Michael Olise's inclusion in France's Under-18s side, Barrett now adds another Royals Academy graduate to the tournament out in France.
Barrett's inclusion comes after winger Neil Farrugia was ruled out of the 2019 competition due to a hamstring injury sufstained in UCD AFC's 1-0 defeat to Waterford on Friday at the Regional Sports Centre.
Barrett last made an Ireland Under-21 appearance against Slovakia in March 2016; the Royals winger had previously been capped at Under-16, Under-17 and Under-19 level.
Josh finished the season strongly, playing a part in both of our final two first team games in the Championship - and he trained with the Irish squad at Johnstown House Hotel yesterday.
Stephen Kenny's will continue to train in Ireland before flying out to the Toulon Tournament on Saturday 1st June ahead of their first match against China's Under-22 side on Monday.
They will then face Mexico and then Bahrain. England are the current holders of the trophy after their win in 2018; two years prior, John Swift was a tournament-winner with the Young Lions too.
Congratulations to Josh on his call-up for Ireland and we look forward to seeing how both he and Danny and Michael get on in Toulon.
