Royals forward Michael Olise has earned his first call-up at international level to be part of the France squad at this summer’s Toulon Tournament.
The 17-year-old attacker began last season as a first-year scholar in our Academy set-up – but quickly rose through the ranks to become a regular Royals representative at Under-23 level, and eventually broke into José Gomes’ first team at the back end of the season where he made four competitive appearances in the Sky Bet Championship.
An impressive season continues for the teenager, who has now been selected to represent the host nation in the prestigious 12-nation Toulon Tournament - officially the 'Tournoi Maurice Revello', after its late founder - when it begins in June. Current Royals Jordan Obita, Yakou Méïté and John Swift are all previous participants in the flagship summer youth tournament; the latter was a winner with England in 2016.
With France's Under-20s currently competing in the U20 World Cup in Poland, it will be an Under-18 squad which represents the host nation this year. Olise is one of three players outside France to make the 20-man squad.
Qualifying to represent 12-time winners France through his family, Olise could potentially earn his first international youth cap when Les Bleuets begin their group stage against Qatar U20 on 2nd June.
Three days later they will host Brazil U23 – the Toulon Tournament includes a variety of age-groups, with the two South American sides Chile and Brazil both sending Under-23 squads – and then their group games finish on 8th June against Guatemala U20.
Each of the three group winners qualify for the semi-final, along with one best-placed runner-up. And all teams get at least one more match, with four placements fixtures scheduled to define the final rankings between 5th and 12th.
Olise and his teammates convene on the French south coast on May 30th as they begin their preparation. Our best wishes go to Michael and the France squad for the tournament.
