Royals 94th minute equaliser secures a point at Brighton

Another gutsy performance sees Reading walk away with a hard-earned draw

29 November 2019

In a familiar story, Kelly Chamber’s Royals pulled off yet another miraculous feat, drawing 2-2 with a last-ditch goal from Remi Allen in the 4th and final minute of additional time to take a point, after Brighton answered Fara Williams’ opening goal with two of their own.

The first ten minutes was spent feeling each other out, as the play moved up and down the frosty pitch.

On the quarter-hour mark, Fara Williams took a corner from the right-hand side and looped the ball straight into the net to open the scoring for the visiting side. The Captain has scored from all over the pitch already this season and can now add the corner flag to her considerable resume.

The home side answered instantly, however, when two-minutes later Aileen Whelan put Brighton level when a goalmouth scramble saw the ball come out to her to fire into the back of the Reading goal.

Williams had several dangerous free-kicks down the right, the majority of which were due to Amalie Eikeland being brought down, as Reading looked to get back in front.

However, Brighton broke after Reading lost possession on the attack and the ball fell to Ini Umotong, who played a clever ball around Sophie Howard and slotted the ball in, to put the home side in front for the first time in the game.

Reading saw the first-half out looking for the equaliser, but it didn’t come before the referee Matthew Russell blew his whistle.

The Royals came out aggressively in the second-half, looking to make their intentions clear from the get-go. Early chances saw both Millie Farrow and Brooke Chaplen played into good positions, but on both occasions, they were cut off by the Brighton defence.

Chances came for Williams through a free-kick that went just wide of the goal, and both Chaplen and Remi Allen were denied by the bar and Walsh made some terrific saves to keep Brighton ahead.

The agony of going painfully close with chance-after-chance started to become a familiar feeling, but the heart of Kelly Chambers’ Royals was also a familiarity, as they kept fighting for the point.

In the fourth and final minute of additional time, there was a goalmouth scramble that had Reading players yelling with raised hands that the ball had crossed the line. The referee waved the appeals away, but Remi Allen made sure by flicking the ball over her right shoulder and into the roof of the net with the lkast kick of the game.
