We Will Remember Them | STAR teach U12s about First World War

Youngsters learn about fallen Reading players

11 November 2019

101 years ago today, the guns fell silent and the First World War came to an end. A brutal lesson to future generations.

And our Academy is once again taking our Under-12 squad to Ypres this year, where they will combine football fixtures against international opposition with an education visit to the battlegrounds where so many made the ultimate sacrifice.

Supporters' Trust at Reading passed on just some of their knowledge and research to the U12s before their visit - making the visit all the more pertinent. Ahead of their trip to Belgium, our youngsters spent some time learning about those players who represented Reading on the field of play and represented their country on the battlefield.

There are countless personal stories of loss and sacrifice from the First World War; we know of 15 players which played for Reading FC who died in battle or as a result of injuries suffered.

Two of those were the focal point of STAR's presentation - take a look at our video above, which explains a little more.
