Following a record-breaking opening weekend in the 2019-20 Barclays FA Women’s Super League and a continued spotlight on the women’s game, the FA have announced the first ever Women’s Football Weekend. The landmark event in women’s football will take place on the 16th and 17th of November and coincides perfectly with Reading FC Women’s clash with Bristol City at the Madejski Stadium.
Kelly Chambers’ team return to RG2 to take on Bristol on Sunday 17th at 2pm in a Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture. The weekend falls during the men’s international break, creating a pause in the English Premier League and EFL calendars, so the FA are calling on supporters to capitalise on the opportunity to back Women’s Football Weekend and to attend a women’s match at any level on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th November.
Reading FC Women have three upcoming fixtures at the Madejski Stadium before the end of the year, with two Continental Cup clashes either side of the Bristol City game; Lewes on October 20th and Crystal Palace on November 21st.
Royals women have been widely tipped for another top 4 finish in the FA Women’s Super League this season, with both Kelly Smith and Arsenal Women boss Joe Montemurro backing them on the Sportwomen show on Sky Sports News. Chambers’ side got off to a flying start in the opening weekend of the WSL, beating Liverpool Women at Prenton Park after a superb 30-yard freekick from England’s record cap holder Fara Williams. This was followed by a defeat against last season’s runners-up Manchester City last weekend in a competitive affair at Adams Park.
Kelly Simmons, The FA’s Director of Women’s Professional Game said: “We are excited to announce the first ever Women’s Football Weekend, for what is sure to be another great moment in a year that has seen huge momentum behind the growth in popularity of women’s football. Following on from a record-breaking FIFA Women’s World Cup and opening Barclays FA Women's Super League weekend, there has never been a better time to visit your local team, and we encourage all supporters to get involved at all levels of the pyramid on 16-17 November.”
