Gomes | "My players deserved more"

Royals boss reflects on our Carabao Cup penalty shootout exit against Premier League opposition...

25 September 2019

A cruel end but Royals boss José Gomes was encouraged by the performance of a much-changed team at Molineux tonight.

"I am pleased by the way we played today," he began. "Before the game, perhaps the expectation was not very high because we were playing away against a Premier League team.

"After the game, I think we deserved more because of the way that we played.

"We conceded a goal which was lucky for them – at half-time we shouldn’t have been losing 1-0. We didn’t deserve that.

"And in the second half, we really dominated the game. Very good combinations, very good actions. We just missed our chances to score.

"It was very positive football. We faced a difficult opponent and showed that we are a solid team. This must give us hope for the future."

The goal we threatened did come late in injury time, via a quite brilliant cross from Swift that was headed home by Boyé.

"It was a very good combination, a very good offensive movement. A fantastic pass from John Swift, and the way that Lucas Boyé attacked the ball, it was a striker’s goal.

"We need to be confident for the future. My players deserved more. We must keep our heads up, considering the way we played today.

"We need consistency. The players have already shown that they have the conditions to play good football. So we need to show this often."
