In a little over a week’s time, we’ll know what our 2020-21 schedule looks like… this year’s #FixtureReleaseDay takes place on Friday 21st August, when our 46 upcoming league games will be defined for the coming year!
It will provide the structure for Mark Bowen and his side to work from when the league campaign kicks off on Saturday 12th September.
That includes our Christmas and Easter schedules, trips near and far, and all of our Madejski Stadium matches. And, importantly, who will provide the opposition on the opening day!
As the league season is beginning six weeks later than usual, 13 of the ties will be contested in midweek evening slots – and the regular season is set to close on the weekend of 8th/9th May 2021.
And after the regular season ends, four clubs will compete in the Play-Offs to try to earn a place in the Premier League – the Play-Off Final in each of the three EFL divisions will take place at Wembley Stadium on the Bank Holiday weekend of 29th-31st May.
So the countdown is on – just over a week to wait before the 2020-21 campaign takes shape!
But even before that, we’ll have one date in the diary. The Carabao Cup First Round draw is set to take place on Sky Sports News on Tuesday 18th August (time TBC).
The First Round ties are due to take place on Saturday 5th September – a week before the commencement of the league season – but may instead be scheduled for an alternative date if necessary due to the international window. As in previous year, the First Round will be split into northern and southern sections, but unseeded.
And there are a few format changes for this year’s competition to look out for.
The early fixtures will come in a flurry – the first four rounds are set to take place in consecutive weeks throughout September, with Round Five (the quarter-final) following in December. A bulk of the Premier League sides enter in Round Two, with teams competing in Europe entering in Round Three.
The Semi-Finals will now be one-legged affairs, played at the stadium of the team drawn out of the hat first, and the final will be contested at Wembley on Sunday 28th February 2021.
