📯 Team news | The eleven who start in our opening pre-season friendly

The team news and format of the friendly against Gillingham...

22 August 2020

Madejski Stadium is back in action and League One Gillingham are our pre-season opponents this afternoon.

And Mark Bowen has handed new signing Josh Laurent a start in a game which is likely to be split into three thirds of 30 minutes.

Rafael Cabral starts in goal, behind a back line of Moore, Morrison and McIntyre.

Andy Yiadom starts his first game since the beginning of March as he works his way back from a hamstring problem, while Omar Richards is in the opposite wing back position.

Laurent is partnered by Andy Rinomhota in midfield, with John Swift and Michael Olise also starting. Lucas Joao leads the line following a hamstring injury that sidelined for much of our post-lockdown action at the tail end of 2019-20.

Royals boss Mark Bowen is expected to make a significant number of changes in this opening pre-season game, so the substitutes bench is sure to be called upon. And on that bench are returning loanees Luke Southwood, Jordan Holsgrove, Tom Holmes and Marc McNulty.

Youngsters Imari Samuels and Dejan Tetek are also included in the squad.

The Royals will be sporting last season's home kit as we intend to wear our new 2020-21 colours when the competitive action begins next month - and there will be no numbers on the backs of our shirts for this game as we wait to register our new set of squad numbers for the new campaign.

Most frustratingly of course, there will be no fans in the stands. However, Royals fans can watch the match via a live stream to the club's official YouTube and Facebook pages.

Reading: Rafael, Yiadom, Richards, Moore, Morrison, McIntyre, Laurent, Rinomhota, Swift, Olise, Joao.
Subs: Southwood, Holsgrove, Holmes, Baldock, Araruna, McNulty, Aluko, Tetek, Samuels, Meite, Puscas.
