For Lucas João, Wednesday night marks a return to a ground he knows well. It’s off to Hillsborough to meet Sheffield Wednesday… where he spent four full seasons as a player, and made 129 appearances.
But he returns to South Yorkshire as a Royals representative for the first time. He’s looking forward to seeing some familiar faces… but intends to be three points better off at the final whistle.
“It will be my first time back at Hillsborough since I came to Reading,” he said. “It will be special to be back there, to go back to this stadium where I was happy.
“It will be good to be back there and see some old teammates – some friends that I left there, some good people. It will be great to see them… but it’s another game to go and try to get the three points for Reading!
“It is difficult to go to Hillsborough because they have good players through their squad… but we have some confidence – we want to keep it and go as far as we can.”
The Owls won’t have supporters back in their stadium just yet – they are one of the Championship sides whose Tier 3 restrictions mean that their wait goes on.
But a pocket of Royals supporters will return to Madejski Stadium next week when we meet Nottingham Forest – a moment that our forward is looking forward to.
“We have all missed the fans,” João continued. “They are more than welcome to come back.
“It’s unfortunate that it’s only 2,000, but the ones that will be here are going to push us, help us and we are going to show them how good we are doing.”
