Yakou Méïté put the Royals in front midway through the first half to see the visitors ahead at the break at Hillsborough.

Wednesday full-back, Osaze Urhoghide was given his marching orders early in the second half for a second bookable offence, and a deft touch from George Pușcaș after Andy Yiadom's initial strike doubled the lead.

Sam Baldock rounded the victory off from the spot in added time, squeezing the ball beyond Cameron Dawson after Andy Rinomhota was brought down in the box.

"The boys put in an absolute shift," Swift beamed after the final whistle. "It was a really good away performance.

"We needed a response after the last game. The first goal was a great goal as well - it took the pressure off us a little bit.

"The red card helped as well, but all credit to the lads. I thought we put in a shift today.

"Everyone could have an extra touch, we had a bit more space but we couldn't be too relaxed.

"If you're too relaxed, if you're a little bit sloppy in the middle of the park a good team like Sheffield Wednesday can always create a chance out of nothing.

"It was good to get the second goal. We could really then put our foot on the ball and relax when we had it, then the third goal sealed it for us."

Storm Dennis was in Sheffield on Saturday afternoon, with swirling rain and strong winds punctuating a fierce encounter between the Royals and Owls at the weekend.

Swift was quick to play down any impact of the weather, however, with a tricky playing surface at Hillsborough in the wet conditions.

"Everyone's played in these conditions for their whole careers, so it's just something you've got to adapt to," Swift reasoned.

"It's hard for the first 10-15 minutes because you've got to get used to it, but other than that you get used to it and the team has to battle on, and thankfully we did that today.

"It was a really good performance from the lads. Wednesday are a good team but they're on a bit of a bad run, and I think we took advantage of that."
