💥"There is nowhere to hide. I'm expecting a huge reaction "

Bitterly disappointed Royals boss demanding desire, bravery and three points against the Tykes...

27 February 2020

When Saturday comes ...we can make amends for a desperately disappointing defeat to Wigan on Wednesday night. And Royals boss Mark Bowen is demanding a totally different performance from his side when Barnsley are our visitors at the weekend.

"Since I became manager, when we have played poorly, we’ve bounced back. My job now, and the task for the players and the coaching staff here, is to make sure we get a reaction on Saturday," he said.

"We’ve got to. Because Wednesday night’s performance was totally unacceptable.

"During my time as manager, I have asked the players to put demands on themselves and each other. It’s not just about me screaming and shouting from the sidelines, it’s about the players on the pitch taking responsibility for their own performances.

"And it's about not accepting it if a teammate doesn’t close down quick enough, doesn’t make the right tackle, doesn’t want to get on the ball.

"We have got a good team spirit here, but at the same time individuals you have to put demands on each other when they cross that white line. Demands to do things better.

"On Wednesday night, I’ve never seen it in this group before, but I saw players wanting to hear the referee’s whistle so they could get back up the tunnel, instead of wanting to turn things around and showing the mental toughness to try to get back into the game.

"But we’ll bounce back. I know the quality I’ve got in my team.

"I totally accept our fans' frustrations after the Wigan game and, I dare say, if I’d paid my money to come and watch what we produced on the night, I’d feel the same as them.

"I do feel the same as them. I’m saying and thinking the same things as our supporters are when they left the ground on Wednesday night. And we’ve got to turn that around on Saturday, make sure we get a win and let our fans leave this stadium feeling totally different to how they left here in midweek.

"And we need our fans. When the confidence is low because things aren’t working, that’s when we need the support of our fans.

"Right now, we’re hurting. We’ve got to bounce back…and we will.

"I'm expecting a huge reaction on Saturday. It’s a difficult game…they all are. But there is nowhere to hide. We need to come here, in front of our fans, perform, and get three points."
