Reading’s Under-23 side took another point in their Premier League Cup group campaign with a 1-1 draw at Colchester United.
If either side had won the fixture, they would have gone top of the table; as it occurred, both remain outside the top two of the four-team group, with two games remaining at Charlton and Swansea in a tightly-contested competition.
U’s stopper Bailey Vose was the foil of the Royals’ attack when Tyler Frost and Conor Lawless each drew good saves.
But Frost eventually penetrated late in the first period; Jeriel Dorsett found his teammate on the run, who in turn struck hard and low.
Reading were good value for their lead; however they were pegged back with 20 minutes remaining as Andre Hassanally raced onto a threaded pass from Miquel Scarlett, and beat Reading stopper Coniah Boyce-Clarke with a firm effort.
Both of the goalscorers went close to winning it with a second for their teams; Frost was scuppered by Vose after going through one-on-one and Hassanally fired wide after earning a late opportunity.
1-1 the score at the final whistle – both teams on five points, with Charlton and Swansea each on six. All teams have two games left to go – it’s set to go to the wire.
