Royals boss Kelly Chambers has been giving her thoughts ahead of this evening’s Continental Cup Quarter-Final clash with Arsenal Women at Meadow Park.
The last time the two sides played, Arsenal walked away with a 3-0 victory at Adams Park in early December, but Chambers took away a lot of positives from the performance, praising her side for not allowing Arsenal to play the sort of football that had seen them beat Bristol City 11-1 just the week before.
“It’s going to be a tough one,” Chambers said, “but the last time we turned out against them we played well and gave them a good game, we just weren’t ruthless enough in their box.”
Arsenal are currently top of the Women’s Super League with 11 wins and 1 loss so far this season. Joe Montemurro’s side also qualified top of Group B to get to the knockout stage of the Conti Cup, winning 4 and drawing 1, and scoring an impressive 25 goals across the 5 group games.
Chambers knows just how dangerous the reigning WSL Champions are, “They’re a quality side with quality players, but we’ll prepare the way we always do for every game, and we just need to make sure we put on a performance.”
“We’ve always been a side that can challenge that top 3”, she continued, “It’s just a case of consistently trying to take points off them and we’ve done it here-and-there every season, it’s been one or the other that we’ll take points off and get a result against, but we need to do it more consistently. Again, it’s a case of us being more ruthless in their box and defending ours a bit stronger”.
Reading FC Women take on Arsenal Women this evening at Meadow Park for a 7.30pm kick-off. The Royals are next in action on Sunday against Everton Women, travelling to The Pure Stadium in the Women’s Super League.
