🗨️ Williams | “Reading have brought the joy back to my game”

England’s most capped player on contract extension with Royals

14 January 2020

Fara Williams has spoken on signing a new contract with Reading FC Women, that sees her staying with the Royals until June 2021.

“It was a really easy decision to sign”, Williams said. “Reading have been a great club for me. Since I’ve joined, they’ve improved me as a player and I’ve really enjoyed my time here so far and we’re moving in the right direction. The signings we’ve made this season, they’re big signings and we’re looking to progress”.

On her relationship with the club, who have shown staunch loyalty to the 35-year old veteran, Williams said, “The fact that Reading are still committed to me at my age and the fact that I am still able to give a little bit on the pitch, it works both ways. Since I’ve come here, they’ve certainly brought the joy back to my game and it’s showing on the pitch. A happy Fara is a good Fara”.

“Finishing 4th in my first year here was great, so was getting to a semi-final last season, but just missing out on Wembley was disappointing.” Williams said, speaking on her highlights since joining the club in the summer of 2017.

The ambitions of Reading FC Women and Williams herself as a player are clear, “Our aim again this year is getting to a cup final and we’re getting close; we have a quarter-final against Arsenal coming up this week and another aim is 4th in the league and we’re currently there. I think we’re just off that top 3, and even with the likes of Manchester United added to the league, I do still think we are a better side than them at this moment in time and we’re certainly trying to push ourselves to stay at that level. Manchester United are a bigger team when it comes to the men’s game, but certainly in the women’s game we have shown our class with the coaching and the players that we have brought in”.

Williams is next in action on Wednesday against her former club Arsenal in the quarter-final of the Continental Cup at Meadow Park, before Reading travel to another of her former clubs, Everton on Sunday in the WSL.

The Royals’ next home game is on February 2nd when Manchester United visit Adams Park in a match that will have huge ramifications for a top 4 spot in the league. Tickets are available to purchase here.
