🔜 Ahead of the game | Midweek dogfight against the Terriers

All the pre-match reading before we meet Huddersfield

7 July 2020

Huddersfield Town have a rather raw bit of history with the Royals – our vanquishers, via penalties, at Wembley three years ago.

A tough day for Royals supporters, as the West Yorkshire side went on to spend two years dining at English football’s top table. After surviving the drop in their first season, they dropped back through the trap-door last summer.

And it’s not been an easy transition to life in the Championship. Any hopes of an instant bounce back were realistically ended before the end of September – two draws, eight defeats and zero wins in all competitions meant that the Terriers had an entirely different battle to think about.

Hovering just two points above the drop-zone down to League One with five games remaining, they need the points. They got a decent point from their home outing against promotion-chasers Preston on Saturday.

Our situation looks a lot healthier after a demolition of Luton at the weekend, who were dispatched 5-0 at Kenilworth Road. A home win on Tuesday night could, potentially, propel us into the top half of the table.

Pre-match chat

Manager Mark Bowen: “Someone asked me that old question – have you got anything to play for? If we haven’t got top six to go for, which we were hoping for, then we have to keep demanding of each other. If not top six, then top ten. If not top ten, then top half.

“We’ve got to have something to play for, to push on over the last five games. We have to make sure that this isn’t a one off. This group of players are well capable, on any given day, of competing and beating the best.”

Forward Yakou Méïté: “We need to recover quick… the games are coming so fast! We celebrate the victory, but we have to stay focused for the game on Tuesday. Hopefully we can get the win at home this time.

“It’s a short time to prepare; as soon as the game against Luton is done, we start to think about Huddersfield and how they play.”
