Is there a more-used cliché than ‘there’s no easy games in the Championship?’
Or, in fact, truer one…?!
Charlton are one of many cases in point. Their battle to stay in the division goes on, as they continue to scrap at the bottom end of the league table… but only really because of how tightly packed the Championship is.
With quality throughout their ranks, and wins this season over the likes of Derby, Brentford, Leeds and Nottingham Forest, any result will need to be earned at The Valley.
“We’ll actually have a day off on Wednesday – that’ll be our first day off in about two weeks, and it allows the players to get off their feet,” said boss Mark Bowen.
“And I’d expect the players to come back in a little bit fresher on Thursday, and fresh mentally as well for the game on Saturday.
“It’ll be a difficult game, Charlton. I watched them play against Millwall the other night and they’re a force on their own ground, a difficult side. They got beat on the night but they were the better side, believe me.
“We’ve got enough to break them down if we do things right on the day and if our quality is better.
“But they’ll ask questions of us. They went up against Brentford away from home on Tuesday. It’s there to see – what can happen if we take our eye off the ball, treat them lightly. I fully expect a hard and difficult game against Charlton and we have to be fully prepared for that.”
