🗯️ “We didn’t lay a glove on them all night”

Royals boss Mark Bowen pulled no punches in describing his disappointment after this evening's 3-0 defeat...

Royals boss Mark Bowen couldn't hide his disappointment after a thoroughly 'second best' performance against an impressive Brentford side at Madejski Stadium.

"In every department, Brentford were stronger than us, quicker than us, brighter than us – they had better movement, more football intelligence than us on the ball, making the right decisions."

"That all culminates in us not really laying a glove on them all night.

"Brentford have come here on the back of two fantastic results, they are in the ascendancy, full of confidence – and they took that confidence into the game. And players who have that confidence are a yard quicker – and right from the off they looked bright in everything they did.

"We’ve had a difficult start back with conceding right at the end against Stoke when it looked like we had three points in the bag, then going to Derby on Saturday and we lose that game despite being the better side in my opinion. So I think we had a lack of confidence on the back of those two games and I think it showed.

"After we conceded the first goal, I think some of my players were hiding. That can’t be right. So me and my staff will have a good look at it and make sure the team is picked for a different result on Saturday at Luton.

"We’ve picked up one point in three games since we came back. Two of those games we put in good performances. But tonight, we were second best by far. We were a long way from the quality that Brentford had tonight.

"But I can’t let this group of players just see out the season. We have got to have something to strive for. We have to get as high up in the league as we can, especially with an eye on next year now.

"We’ll get back onto the training ground, do the things we’re good at...and focus. We’ll do all the things we need to do to get a performance out of the team on Saturday."
