📈 “We had a difficult month, but we learned – we’re maturing!”

Lucas João on a goal and assist in Robins win

30 November 2020

After a month without the taste of victory, the Royals finally got back on the winning trail with a well-merited 3-1 win against Bristol City at Madejski Stadium.

Striker Lucas João was delighted that the side was able to take lessons from the past and put them into full effect – not getting disheartened when the Robins stole level against the run of play, continuing to grind out chances, and ultimately taking victory.

“After a hard month, finally we could get the winning feeling,” Lucas said. “The team effort and all the performances we have done today were such a nice feeling, and to get the three points.

“We all know that the Championship is not easy – it has never been easy, and we didn’t expect to win all the games. A bad moment came to us – but today we won. We want to celebrate and then look forward the next.

“We went to Millwall and I think we could have had more from that game. Today we proved that we want more and we have more!

“Our first half was good… but we improved in the second one, which is why we achieved the three goals.

“We had such a difficult month, but we learned from our mistakes, and today we showed that we learned. After they equalised, we got our minds clear and went after the next game. That showed maturity. We have learned from our losses – we will learn, we will keep fighting.”

João’s driving run was what sparked the first goal – eventually finding teammate Ovie Ejaria, whose deflected effort found the net.

Then his 12th goal of the campaign, which came in stoppage time, sealed victory – two more important contributions from the Portuguese hitman, who was pleased to play his part.

He continued: “It’s good to hold the ball and then get your head up and see players like Ovie and to give the ball to him. He found the goal, so it’s always good to get an assist and help the team.

“Whether it’s assists, goals or hard work… in the end, we’re all going to be happy.

“There is still a long way to go and a lot of games to play. What I want is to carry on in this good moment, help the team, and in the end we will see what happens.”
