💪 Nayler | “Using mistakes as learnings is the only way to get back on track”

Royals goalkeeper on writing a mental training book

9 October 2020

Reading FC Women and New Zeland goalkeeper Erin Nayler has been speaking about authoring an e-book that explores the mental side of the game.

Nayler began writing ‘The Goalkeeper’s Handbook’ earlier in the year and it was released two weeks ago.

“The book is about how goalkeepers can deal with the mental side of the game, which is a huge part of goalkeeping.” Nayler said.

Nayler, a regular between the posts for New Zealand, had spent the past three seasons representing Bordeaux before signing for Kelly Chambers’ Royals back in August.

On what inspired her to write the book, Nayler said, “I was inspired by my own experiences with overcoming certain psychological components of the game. I used to write down notes to help prepare my mind before a match and realised that I could create something that all goalkeepers and even outfield players could use.”

The former Bordeaux player has over 60 caps for her native New Zeland and boasts a wealth of experience at the very top level of professional football, and as a result is able to draw on a wealth of knowledge. “One piece of advice would be to use training to build resilience and test yourself mentally so that when tough situations arise in the game, your mind will be prepared to handle them.”

Nayler has confirmed that several readers have already benefited from the book. “People seem to enjoy the practical tips that can be used to enhance performance on the field, there’s been some very positive feedback.”

Signing off, Nayler reiterated how important it is to maintain a confident and optimistic state of mind in professional sport. “Keeping a positive mental attitude can be hard when things don't go right but it is always so important to remember that football is a game and it is to be enjoyed; it’s the reason we play sport in the first place.

“Being in a professional environment obviously demands high expectations and standards but staying positive and using mistakes as learnings is the only way to get back on track.”

‘The Goalkeeper’s Handbook’ by Erin Nayler is available to download as an ebook here.
