Reading FC Women will host Charlton Athletic this evening under the lights of Madejski Stadium in the first group-stage game of the Continental Cup.
The Royals welcome Women’s Championship side Charlton for a 7.30pm kick-off in the opening game of Group D, while Brighton & Hove Albion host West Ham in the group’s other fixture at Broadfield Stadium.
Charlton are currently sat in 7th position in the Championship, with a win, loss and draw from their first three games of the 2020-21 campaign.
Last season, Kelly Chambers’ Royals qualified in second place in their group, behind Chelsea, who Reading beat on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the final group-stage game. Reading eventually bowed out in the Quarter-Finals to Arsenal due to a late Kim Little goal for the eventual-finalists. The Quarter-Final made it three straight appearances in the knock-out stages for the Royals since the change in format, having reached the same stage the previous year and the Semi-Final in 2017-18.
“I’ve said it before, but the girls want to win trophies,” Chambers said. “We, as a club, want to win trophies too, so we have to treat every game along the way like a cup final. Each league is growing and evolving, meaning there are no easy games anymore, across the board.
“We’ve played Charlton a few times over the years and know what they bring to the table, so we have to be focused and make sure that we make the right decisions in front of goal and work like a team, as we have shown we can do in our last two wins against Villa and West Ham.”
